This workshop is hosted by the Preservation Trades Network as a pre-conference workshop to its annual International Preservation Trades Workshop. 

Description

This building documentation workshop will focus on photography-based documentation, photogrammetry, in the form of multi-image panoramas which may exceed life-size in resolution.  Photogrammetry helps users to develop work scope through inspection while avoiding excessive mobilization cost in the discovery phase, communicate work scope through on image annotation, and allows outside remote experts to participate through web-based interaction.  Please see examples at instructor web address.  We will meet at Ft. Pulaski National Park and form teams to document areas of the fort.  There is advance light homework which will be sent after you register.  Advance materials will describe approaches to photogrammetry and understanding natural site conditions which may effect documentation.  We will perform intentionally defective documentation on at least one area so the participants can understand why certain approaches fail.  We will have some camera and tripod equipment available for participants, however, participants will benefit if they bring their own camera equipment and tripod. 

Participants will learn about the following:

• Understanding site conditions
• Building architecture or features which may speed or hinder standardized documentation.
• Approaches to documenting special features or situations.
• Defining owner needs for documentation and documentation goals.
• Converting needs and goals into documentation strategy and image resolution.
• Choice of camera lens system to meet goals.
• Photographer strategies for documentation capture.
• Reviewing raw imagery and selecting images by computer.
• Image assembly.
• Review of final composite images.

After workshop website will be made available to participants to fully explore images and end uses.

Manassas Consulting was founded in 1991 and began to specialize in documentation of buildings and public art in 2006. Battle hails from Memphis, Tennessee, but currently resides in Pennsylvania. He as documented buildings from Ft. Jefferson on Dry Tortugas west of Key West, Florida to the Washington State Capitol campus in Olympia, Washington. Objects of documentation range from colonial foursquare homes, to public art and sculpture, to U.S. Army Corps facilities, to historic forts, and modern brutalist phase poured in place concrete.

Driven by a deep passion for historic architecture and the preservation of existing buildings, Manassas Consulting is dedicated helping buildings speak to tell their story. A unique suite of web-based tools will be briefly demonstrated for analysis and work scope development, and will be made available to participants to showcase their work after the conference.

Parking is available on site. Workshop attendees will have a waived entrance fee, with parking included. Follow signs to the visitor's center to meet the workshop group in the parking lot. Fort Pulaski National Monument is an approximately 20 - 30 minute drive from downtown Savannah.

Ethos Preservation is located in a restored train car on Georgia State Railroad Museum's campus, that includes the Savannah History Center. Parking is available at $2/hour next to the Savannah Visitor’s Center, which needs to be accessed via MLK Jr Blvd. Parking is not included. 

WHAT TO EXPECT

Besides a good time, prepare to be active and learn. Participants will be sitting, standing, bending and using their hands, in addition to working outside in the weather. Participants should: 

• Wear comfortable works clothes and close-toed shoes
• Bring a jacket and/or a rain jacket in case of rain and temperature changes
• Wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and/or a sun hat
• Water bottle
• Bring lunch or money to purchase lunch at a downtown restaurant
• Plan their transportation to Fort Pulaski and to Ethos Preservation

Optional equipment for participants to bring:

• SLR or mirrorless camera of at least 12 megapixels
• Long lenses for your camera, 100mm and up.  Fixed preferred to zoom.  
• Tripod
• Tripod head. Geared heads preferred should you happen to own one.

We will provide:

• Admission to Fort Pulaski National Monument.
• Tools and materials - camera tripod equipment and computers for image transfer and assembly
• Additional sunscreen
• Bug Spray
• Water
• Snacks

REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Cost per participant is $150. There is a limit of 12 participants. We will intake a waiting list. By registering to the event, you agree to our event policies and procedures--please read them here. Registrants can cancel their registration up to 30 days before the workshop for a full refund minus any associated taxes and fees. Cancellations within 30 days of the event will not be refunded, with exceptions in PTN's Health and Safety Policy.
